Presentation

The Corriente Popular (Popular Trend) is a party that is a member of the Encuentro Progresista-Frente Amplio-Nueva Mayoría coalition, that won the elections of October 2004. The socialist doctor Tabaré Vázquez was elected as President of Uruguay in that election. The most important leader of the Popular Trend is deputy (representative) Carlos Pita.

The Corriente Popular was originally the Corriente Popular Nacionalista (Nationalist Popular Trend), an internal group of Partido Nacional that broke with that traditional party and transformed itself in an independent political party. The Corriente Popular Nacionalista was founded in 1983 and split from the National Party in 1986. In 1987 after a trial, the electoral court forbids the group the right to use the name Nacionalista (Nationalist) and that way it becomes Corriente Popular. The group enters in the Frente Amplio the same year of 1987.

Its first flags showed its ties with the National Party, with the acronym "CPN", that was changed after that to "CP". In the first time, the "peace dove" was kept (with a different design) by the group. For the elections of 1999 the party continued a similar design in the fonts that was finally changed to the present design of flag (absolutely new) after the 1999 elections.

Flag

The present day flag of Corriente Popular is red and blue with the acronym of the party name in white letters "cp" in the red part. In the blue part there is a white number: "1303" (for the list ballot number of the party) with the first "3" mirrored. The uncommon detail in this design is that the letters appear "cut" by the borders of the flag.

In the Official website of Corriente Popular there is a picture of the flag and a drawing of the "cut" logo. However in this picture only the top half of the flag could be seen.

In a picture shown in another picture taken during meetings made in Montevideo for a referendum, the complete flag could be seen.

This flag was used by Corriente Popular during the electoral campaign for the 1999 elections. It has a similar font to the previous 1994 design.

During this time, the 1994 "vertical" variant with the Espacio 90 logo was still used.

The flags used by Corriente Popular during the electoral campaign for the 1994 elections showed their origins of Corriente Popular Nacionalista (the "peace dove" was still present) but with a slightly modified design. In the letters a red circle appeared inside the "c" and the "p". With this change the colors of the Frente Amplio (red, blue and white) were present in Corriente Popular flags.

Variant

This "vertical" variant of the Corriente Popular flag used for the 1994 elections, had the logo of Espacio 90 (Space 90), an internal group and list of the Frente Amplio. The Socialist Party is also member of Espacio 90. In this time the logo of Espacio 90 had a "sketched Frente Amplio flag" below. Nowadays this "sketched flag" is not used in this logo.

The flags of Corriente Popular in 1987 were very similar to the flags used by Corriente Popular Nacionalista before. However, the variant of the flag with the name "PARTIDO NACIONAL" was not used anymore since the group quit the party. And the text "CORRIENTE POPULAR" was added below the peace dove in some flags. However the old acronym "CPN" was still used. This was the flag used in the moment when Corriente Popular entered in the Frente Amplio.

This flag of Corriente Popular Nacionalista (Nationalist Popular Trend) was white with a blue lined "peace dove" design and the acronym of the group (CPN) in blue letters. This election of colors clearly showed the condition of this group as an internal group of National Party. Although the flag of that party is white and light blue, the blue color is also used by the party in internal groups flags.

Variant

This variant of the Corriente Popular Nacionalista flag had a different design of the "peace dove" and it had the inscription "PARTIDO NACIONAL" (National Party) to show the group's membership in that political party. This kind of flag was abandoned when the group quit the National Party.
